Mediocrity -A trait for success??

I’m intrigued. Most children dread the thought of Parents Teacher Meeting. The very thought of going to school with parents gives cold feet to many children. Sitting downcast avoiding eye contact even with classmates, waiting for their turn. Even though teachers avoid talking negative in PTMs, but the sweet talk hardly cheers up the child. Coming out of the class room some children are chided for being lazy, careless, talkative, mischievous, outspoken, or plainly disobedient.

Have you ever wondered how you would come out of Nursery and Kindergarten classroom, happily encouraging your child, patting his shoulder and perhaps treating him for being a good boy / girl in the class. Primary classes started on a soft scolding, to get better. Middle school brought more scolding, serious warnings, sometimes grounding the child. High school brought in more restrictions, threats and warnings along with pressure of studies, peer pressure and much more. Lo, the child is growing looking at life from a different perspective, in his /her eyes teens means seen and experienced life for more than a decade however, from a parent’s perspective he /she is still a child too young to understand. Constant nagging, differences, arguments make life all the more difficult for children. All this pressure makes them scream like the whistle of pressure cooker. Their studies are affected, they are labelled as average, mediocre, poor, dumb… somewhere the scores on report card become a parameter of success. These labels start coming from teachers as they are only judging their performance in their subject. Gradually, parents also begin accepting the labels, peers also see the child with labels. All this results in low self-esteem for the child. The age when they are brimming with energy to explore their potential, they start reading the labels and accepting second grade life, they stop fighting to reach the top, trying to find a place among the crowd to stand unnoticed.
